Experimental Investigation of Overdischarge Effects on Commercial Li-Ion Cells

Due to their attractive properties, such as high energy and power density, Lithium-ion batteries are currently the most suitable storage system for powering portable electronic equipment, electric vehicles, etc. However, they still affected by safety stability problems that need be solved allow a wider range of applications, especially critical areas networks aeronautics. In this paper, issue overdischarge abuse has been addressed on cells with different anode materials: graphite-based Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO)-based model. Tests were carried out at depths discharge (DOD%) in order determine effect DOD% cell performance conditions often make fail irreversibly. graphite have shown higher than 110% is damaged irreversibly; while lower electrolyte deposits form anodic surface structural damage affects cathode during cycling after overdischarge. Furthermore, any DOD%, copper found anode. contrast anode, it was always possible recharge LTO-based restore operation, though case 140% drastic reduction recovered capacity observed. no there venting cell, or explosive event.
